Early Grade Reading Instruction Curriculum (EGRIC) held a book donation ceremony at the Kenya Science Campus to donate 14,400 books to 12 primary schools in Nairobi and Machakos County. The Centre, in partnership with University of York, United Kingdom and the University of Concordia, Canada has been implementing the Cross-Age Peer Tutoring in the teaching of reading project in Kenya which aims at helping pupils in lower primary schools enhance their reading skills. The project is led by Prof. Frank Hardman, University of York as the Principal investigator and Dr. Justus Inyega, University of Nairobi as the Co-investigator.
The ceremony was officiated by The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Henry Mutoro on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi. In his Speech, He challenged the pupils to embrace education as a gateway to a better future. He stressed the need for the pupils to set clear goals and envision joining the University of Nairobi in future.
Also speaking at the event was the Co-investigator for the project, Dr. Justus Inyega. While giving a detailed background on the project, he noted, “there are 24 book titles and each school will receive 50 copies of each title making a total of 1,200 story books per school. During the event, head teachers, teachers and pupils from Jamhuri and Kilimani Primary Schools received some of the books; the rest of the books will be distributed in due course. Pilot schools provided with reading materials will use the books for class 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils during the research project duration.
In attendance were Dr. Isaac Kipchirchir, Associate Dean, Dr. Ursullah Okoth, Ag. Associate Dean, School of Education, Timothy Maonga, Teaching Practice Coordinator, Dr. Mari Nelson, Dr. Hellen Inyega, and Dr. Andrew R. Riechi all from University of Nairobi, the Principal, Jamhuri Primary School and the Deputy Principal, Kilimani Primary School.
