The idiom ‘’all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy “hold true even for
the young learners. Sport whether team based or individual, are great for
children as they provide not just physical activity but also help build
children’s self esteem ,confidence and social skills and motivate them to
excel in life. In recognition of the importance of sports in a child’s
life KSC Nursery school holds sports day every year which falls in second
term. It is an inter houses competition that Mt Kilimanjaro (red) Mt
Elgon (blue) and Mt Kenya (yellow). We at the KSCN strongly believe that
for a holistic development of a child, sports are equally important as
academics. The annual sport day help children explore their hidden sports
interest as they enjoy a healthy competition with each other. More than
that such events help them learn the benefits of goal setting and
practice. In modern education system, the sport has been made an integral
part of education to make education interesting, tension free and
enjoyable. Education is considered incomplete without sport because
education with sports activities draws more attention of children towards
study. Sports activities stimulate the physical and mental growth in
children. Its improves memory level, concentration level and learning
capacity of the children.
Teacher Jayne Msemwa was the coordinator of the event. The day began with
musical exercises that involved parents, teachers and the children. The
coordinator enlightened the parents on the importance of sports in young
children. The day covered both indoor and outdoor activities. Children
activities were done according to age and every child in the school
participated including physically challenged. Parents also took part in
the activities eg. Skipping with ropes, rolling tyres, running relays
and many others.
The Karen Hospital graced the occasion by offering parents free medical
checkup and enlightening parents the importance of sports and exercises.
Parents had a chance to ask questions regarding physical health of their
children.
The growth of any nation depends on the health and strength of its
citizens. Let‘s use sports to transform children’s lives from their very
first day in school and to develop a holistic child.
